BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Deputies with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office visited Donnie Guillory on Friday as he continues recovering from the April 24 shooting at the Mall of Louisiana.
In a social media post, EBRSO said their members stopped by to show support for Guillory, who was injured in the shooting. Deputies said they wanted to recognize the strength and resilience they saw during the visit, as well as the support surrounding him.
Guillory was previously identified by the Baton Rouge Soccer Club as a player in its Unified Soccer Program, which serves athletes with special needs. The club said he was in critical condition but that his prognosis was considered positive as he underwent additional surgery.
EBRSO said Guillory has long been a familiar face at Special Olympics events in the community and has built relationships with deputies over the years, including those who have run alongside him, cheered him on, and celebrated his accomplishments.
During the visit, EBRSO said its team presented Guillory with a motorcycle helmet from the Motors Division that was signed by deputies as a message of encouragement during his recovery.
The Mall of Louisiana shooting left one person dead and multiple others injured. Authorities continue to investigate.
