BILLINGS, Mont. — The Billings MMIP Advocacy Group shifted its focus this year from holding an annual MMIP event to building a weekly women’s recovery group centered on prevention and long-term support.
The group, called the No Hangover Krew, meets every Sunday. Organizers say it was created in February to support women in recovery and recently went public in April to the community offering a consistent safe space for women to meet and create community.
Advocates connected that work to broader issues tied to missing and murdered Indigenous women cases, including domestic violence, substance use and limited access to culturally appropriate resources.
Charlene Sleeper, an MMIP Billings advocate, said the need in Billings was clear.
“Billings Indigenous population is underserved. With the current resources available, they’re not very culturally sensitive. So, the importance of this particular group is to hopefully continue developing these types of resources for women in our particular community and then inspire other people and other communities to do something similar.”
Sleeper says the group aims to address those gaps in culturally sensitive care before women reached a crisis point.
“We would like to be able to create a safe space specifically for all women. It’s open to all women in order for them to feel like they have somewhere they belong that honors and respects them and both guarantee that we can keep them safe,” said Sleeper.
The MMIP Billings advocacy project says it’s goal is prevention throughout the year by meeting women where they are each week instead of focusing on a single annual event.
The No Hangover Krew meets on Sundays from 10-11 a.m. at Mazevo Coffee located at 819 Grand Avenue.
