NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — When the four astronauts aboard the Artemis II made their return to Earth, a Niagara Falls native was among the first people to greet them.
A new blog post by the Navy Office of Community Outreach is highlighting the military career of Niagara Falls High School graduate, Seaman Jermani Justus.
“Growing up in a hometown that is economically challenged taught me the importance of having a strong work ethic and taking advantage of opportunities that you can benefit from,” Justus told the Office of Community Outreach.
Justus currently serves on the USS John P. Murtha, an amphibious transport dock responsible for picking up astronauts and spacecraft after they splash down. The ship is equipped with a well deck, a helicopter pad, and onboard medical facilities, designed to recover the Orion space capsule and the data from its trip.
Justus says he’s proud of being a sailor, and helping others achieve their goals. “Serving in the Navy means everything to me,” Justus says. “It’s been changing my life for the better. It gives me a chance to better myself, protect the ones I love, and set myself and my family up for success.”
