SULPHUR, Okla. (KTEN) — Sulphur taxpayers are looking for answers on the road to recovery after the April 2024 tornado.
“Downtown is going to come back; we just need people to believe,” said Jeff Flowers, chairman of the Sulphur Recovery Task Force.
Sulphur has been surviving since the tornado destroyed much of downtown, but the city is finally on the road to long-term recovery.
A town hall meeting Tuesday night gave residents a clearer plan for that process.
“It’s very important for clarity and openness and to make sure everyone knows what’s going on, and trying to get everybody on board to make this community the way it needs to be,” Flowers said.
The topics of discussion ranged from grant funding to clean-up efforts.
“The public thinks that the city has received up to $64 million, which is entirely untrue,” Flowers said.
According to a presentation from the city manager, they’ve used $2.3 million from FEMA so far, and are waiting on possibly millions more if other grants are approved.
“There’s a multitude of special places right in this area — a lot of them hard hit by the tornado — but we can participate in the guidance of how this gets built back,” said Helen Siewers, a landscape architect with the National Park Service.
A new aspect of long-term recovery is improving the quality of life through walking and biking trails downtown.
“What are the destinations that people would like to reach if they hopped on their bicycle or laced on their hiking shoes in the morning?” Siewers asked.
Addressing infrastructure concerns is also at the top of the list.
“There was at one time a walking tour of fountains around Sulphur — that would be something to look at again,” Siewers said.
Sulphur’s future of a fully-finished rebuild is still years away, but city staff emphasize progress is at the forefront of their minds.
