A recent survey that came out of the IMS Business Report found that Electronic Dance Music came in 3rd for most popular music genre. If these findings were applied to the global population, it would be estimated that 1.5 billion people listen to electronic dance music. Electronic dance music came in behind pop and rock, and beat hip-hop, rap, trap and R&B. The survey was given to 19,000 people in 18 different countries between the ages of 16 and 64.
When is comes to sales on Beatport, techno came in first with techhouse at number two. Techno has come in first most years, except for a drop in 2016 to 2nd. When it came to highest paid DJs Calvin Harris still came in first, but there was an overall drop in what DJs earn. Though they still make a crazy amount of money.
It seems that Electronic Dance Music is becoming more and more popular. It can be heard in stores, on commercials, in movies and video games. The once underground sound is becoming the sound of our time. Rock and pop are still very strong and it is no surprise they are coming in first and second. Rock will especially be more popular for the older participants, and pop will be popular through out all ages.
Do you think Electronic Dance Music should hold the 3rd spot? You can check out the full study here.
