Faith leaders, city officials gather to discuss next phase of tornado recovery – First Alert 4

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – City leaders, faith organizations and some of the region’s top developers are scheduled to meet Wednesday to discuss what long-term recovery should look like in neighborhoods impacted by the May 16 tornado.
The event, set for 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Delmar Divine, will focus on how churches can play a larger role in rebuilding communities beyond the immediate aftermath of disaster.
Organizers say the discussion will center on a broader question: What should recovery look like five, 10 or even 20 years after a major storm?
The meeting comes as recovery efforts continue nearly a year after the deadly tornado tore through parts of St. Louis, leaving widespread destruction in several neighborhoods.
According to organizers, many churches quickly became relief hubs in the days following the storm, offering shelter, food, supplies and support for families displaced by damage.
Now, the Spirit of St. Louis Task Force wants to expand that role.
Wednesday’s luncheon and leadership roundtable will bring together Mayor Cara Spencer, the city’s chief recovery officer, leaders from the St. Louis Development Corporation and local pastors who have already led redevelopment efforts tied to their churches.
Discussions are expected to focus on long-term neighborhood rebuilding strategies, including whether churches can function as community anchors that help drive housing, economic development and neighborhood stabilization.
Organizers are also expected to discuss resiliency hubs and revolving funds designed to speed redevelopment projects in hard-hit communities.
