SPRINGTOWN, Texas — Cleanup and recovery efforts have begun in Springtown after a weekend of severe weather, officials say.
On Friday, Springtown and the rest of Parker County were hit by severe weather and a deadly EF-1 tornado. Winds there reached a peak of 105 mph, WFAA previously reported. One person was killed in the storm. One person was killed in the storm.
The American Red Cross has set up shelters at the First United Methodist Church on 3rd Street in Springtown for those in need. Additional shelters may open at other local facilities as needed.
Springtown Mayor Mike Kelley has issued a disaster declaration for the next seven days. City Council can also vote to extend the declaration as necessary.
“As we move forward, our focus now shifts to recovery,” Kelley said in a statement. “The City stands ready to take any and all actions necessary to assist residents with cleanup and repairs. To support these efforts, I have issued a disaster declaration, which will position our community to access any disaster relief funding that may become available at the state or federal level.”
Debris removal began immediately after the storm, allowing volunteers to clear the roadways in just four hours, according to the mayor. City officials are coordinating with Frontier Waste for extensive debris removal in the coming days. Residents outside the City of Springtown are advised to contact their county commissioner’s office for information on services available in their area.
Oncor continues power restoration in the area. As recovery efforts continue, power outages will be monitored, and additional cooling centers will reopen as needed.
“In times like these, I am reminded of the strength and resilience of our community. Neighbors helping neighbors, checking in on one another, and lending a hand where it might be needed is what I hope will continue to define us in the days ahead,” said Mayor Kelley.
