A Stevens County deputy was shot during a standoff with a burglary suspect but is expected to recover.
UPDATE: April 28 at 6:15 p.m.
According to the sheriff’s office, the injured deputy was hit twice in the upper chest and shoulder area, returned fire and was pulled from the scene.
The deputy was taken to a hospital for treatment where he had surgery. He’s in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery, the sheriff’s office said.
A drone sent into the house showed the suspect appearing to be dead in a bedroom, according to the sheriff’s office.
When deputies entered, they confirmed the suspect was injured, possibly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Life saving measures were attempted, but the suspect was declared deceased, the sheriff’s office added.
Washington State Patrol’s Independent Investigative Team has taken over the case under Washington law for officer-involved shootings.
The Stevens County Sheriff’s Office said it would not release more information and thanked agencies including the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Stevens County Fire District 1, Deer Park Ambulance, Spokane County Fire District 9, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Spokane Police Department and Providence for helping at the scene and with medical care.

“In the process, shots were fired,” Gowin said. In the standoff, a deputy was shot, he said. The deputy was taken to a hospital in Spokane and is expected to survive, Gowin said.
Gowin said the situation “has been resolved” and that there is no further threat to the community. He added that law enforcement was processing the scene.

SUNCREST, Wash. – The Nine Mile Falls School District told parents to avoid dropping off their kids on the corner of Suncrest Drive and Greenfield due to law enforcement activity.
The District said law enforcement told school bus traffic to stay at least “one half mile” away from the location.
