BBB offers advice on how to recover from a scam – KFVS12

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KFVS) – In recognition of Scam Survivor Day on Thursday, May 14, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is offering advice to help scam victims.
Their experts say the top priority after a scam is to prevent further damage by starting a path to securing money, credit or identity:
The BBB also offers a “Scam Survival Toolkit” to help guide scam victims through a personalized recovery plan. The toolkit can be found online by clicking here.
According to the BBB, of those who reported getting scammed to the organization, 53 percent said they felt anxiety, stress, and/or trauma. About 30% said that the incident impacted their mental health.
“The impact of a scam goes way beyond financial loss. It can also be very emotionally damaging,” said BBB St. Louis president and CEO Michelle L. Corey, in a released statement. “People are often dealing with feelings of shame, guilt or anger, even though it’s not their fault they were wronged.”
The BBB said Scam Survivor Day, recognized on the second Thursday of every May, is intended to empower people who have experienced a scam and reduce the stigma.
