State funding is coming to Northeast Tennessee with millions going toward Hurricane Helene recovery and public safety.
News 5’s Natalea Hillen shows us how that money is helping Carter County fire departments rebuild.
In Carter County, this funding brings relief to three volunteer fire departments hit hard by Helene.
Fire chiefs told News Five's Natalea Hillen after losing trucks in the flood, this funding helps them replace what was lost and rebuild stronger.
There was major devastation left behind at the Elk Mills-Poga Volunteer Fire Department in Carter County after Helene tore through the region in September 2024.
Since then, Elk Mills-Poga Chief Michael Walsh said they’ve been working with far less than what they need.
Elk Mills-Poga isn’t alone. Hampton-Valley Forge and Roan Mountain Volunteer Fire Departments also suffered major damage, losing buildings, equipment, and fire trucks in the flood.
Now, state leaders said help is on the way. Tennessee Senator Rusty Crowe said all three departments will receive $500,000 each for a new fire truck and other funding he said was secured through the state budget.
Fire chiefs told News Five's Natalea Hillen the new equipment will make a lasting difference.
