A rescue dog whose story inspired thousands is continuing to make progress after undergoing a life-changing surgery that restored his ability to open his mouth for the first time in years.

Dodge, a dog rescued through Route 66 Pet Rescue, recently underwent surgery to correct a severe jaw condition that had left his mouth locked for approximately four and a half years. The condition affected nearly every aspect of his daily life, including eating, drinking and physical activity.
Now, his foster family says Dodge is thriving.
Jessica Saffa, Dodge’s foster, said one of his first milestones came the very night after surgery.
“He was able to open his mouth and eat chicken on the first night after surgery and drink water normally as well,” Saffa said.
Since his activity restrictions were lifted, Dodge has been enjoying longer walks, time off-leash in the backyard and chewing on bones as he works to rebuild strength in his jaw muscles.
Saffa believes Dodge’s resilience is one reason so many people have connected with his story online.
“Despite everything he went through, he’s always remained happy, loving and spunky,” she said. “People were rooting for him to have a happy ending, and now he finally gets the chance to live a full and normal life.”
His distinctive crooked face has also become part of his charm, helping turn the rescue dog into a social media favorite.
Dodge’s recovery is still ongoing. He continues to undergo physical therapy under sedation to help stretch his jaw and improve mobility. His caregivers remain hopeful that his progress will continue in the months ahead.
The story has attracted widespread attention, including interest from The Dodo, which has reached out to feature Dodge’s journey.
Leaders with Route 66 Pet Rescue say stories like Dodge’s highlight the importance of rescue organizations and foster networks that give animals a second chance at life.
The rescue encourages community members to support its mission through donations, fostering, adopting and sharing rescue stories online.
As Dodge continues healing, his caretakers say his updates have become a source of joy and hope for animal lovers following along.
“He’s finally getting to experience life the way every dog should,” Saffa said.
