SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio nurse who fell into a coma after suffering acute liver failure during her honeymoon in Japan is showing encouraging signs of recovery, according to her family.
Sarah Danh, 27, is no longer on life support and is breathing on her own, her uncle, Khang Le, shared Thursday night in a social media update. Le said Danh has begun to regain some physical strength, including moving her arms, wiggling her toes and, with assistance, taking a few small steps.
Danh, a labor and delivery nurse at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital, was hospitalized in Tokyo after her liver suddenly failed, prompting an emergency medical evacuation back to Texas. At one point, doctors warned she had suffered brain damage and might not regain normal function.

While her condition has improved, Le said Danh still faces significant challenges. She is not yet able to eat, drink, speak or control her fingers, and her memory remains inconsistent. However, she has shown emotional responses, smiling, crying and reacting to loved ones.
Le said Danh is expected to require extensive physical and cognitive therapy once she is stable enough to leave the intensive care unit.
Her family continues to ask for prayers and support as she begins what is expected to be a long recovery.
