Tornado recovery continues in Runaway Bay – Wise County Messenger

Recovery efforts in Runaway Bay continued Friday following the EF-2 tornado that devastated dozens of families April 25, with crews focused on clearing debris, stabilizing damaged homes and assisting residents still reeling from the storm.
At Just Jesus Church, the Wise County Office of Emergency Management worked alongside nonprofits, area churches and local businesses to support storm victims — compiling a list of unmet needs, distributing donations and connecting families with available resources. This is the second organized recovery event, with the first held Monday.

While roads along the tornado’s path in Runaway Bay have been cleared, the impact of the 130-mph winds are still evident and heartbreaking, with large trees snapped in half, homes leveled and possessions scattered and wrapped around trees.

Pct. 4 Commissioner Colby Shawn and Wise County OEM Planning Coordinator Jennifer Klemke said efforts will ramp up Saturday with a major push to dispose of additional storm debris.

A burn pile has been established on Port-o-Call Drive near Cumberland Trail, with bulldozers bringing in loads of brush that are monitored at the site. A temporary tree and brush drop-off site at FM 2123 and County Road 3655 is also open to the public. Large volumes of debris have already been brought in, and the site will remain open Saturday.
