The wife of Monroe Mayor Robert Burns is recovering after being bitten by a large copperhead, which is the most widespread venomous snake in North Carolina.
Burns wrote on his Facebook page that his wife was bitten on April 29 and was taken to the emergency room immediately. He praised the hospital staff for their response.
“The staff at our local hospital were absolutely amazing,” he said. “They were responsive, kind, very helpful, and overall fantastic.”
Burns said the family’s primary concern was whether anti-venom, which carries its own risks, would be needed and whether his wife would require an extended hospital stay. Her condition stabilized and she was released, though Burns cautioned the family was “not out of the woods yet.”
